Heddon 150 Crackleback

Now this was an incredible find in my opinion. Not simply because of the lure, which was impecable, crackleback finish and has glass eyes, L-rig hardware, red blush chin, and marked props. But because of the original antique fishing lure box that was included and the original Heddon inside wrapping. This little diddy brought in a pretty penny for the seller @ $445.07. You can check out the auction here.

Another Heddon Banger

Well, hello all. Sorry it's been a bit but just had to let you know something. There are some heavy Heddon bangers online that will be closing out today on ebay. These are very top dollar lures and highly collectible. Problem is, they are a little out of my price range but if you are collecting to value, ebay has some rocking little Heddon lures that are closing out today.

Up first is: 2207: Heddon 900 Swimming Minnow Lure
This is a model 2207 Heddon 900 Swimming Minnow. Finished in white body with red spots, black back stripe and red hand painted gill marks. Strong Ex- due to varnish flaking along the back, otherwise very bright and shiny. Includes an unmarked white border down bass box, c1912, about VG+ condition with wear and staining. Oustanding. Current bid is $625.00 but this one I'd expect will go much higher.

Next is: 2208: Heddon Heavy Casting Minnow Lure in Box
Heddon 176 Heavy Casting Minnow. Finished in green back rainbow with red hand painted gill marks, large glass eyes (1 cracked), unmarked props and oversized, heavy duty cup and screw eye hardware. About VG+ with a chip to wood under the tail and flaking to primer along one edge. Complete package includes the rarely seen original tall wood slide top box with writing on all four sides and top, about VG+ due to two broken rails.

There are about 12 others that are in this category out on ebay that are ending today. These are awesome lures to add to any collection. Good luck!

Antique Fishing Lures: Reissued Heddon Punkinseed 9630

Back in 2005/2006, the Heddon Punkinseed was reissued with 50 special order colors in a limited production run (600 per color) to Simmons Sporting Goods. Not to worry though about getting these confused with the much older and much more valuable punkinseeds, these were all clearly marked "Heddon 9630 Punkinseed" on their belly's. Very easily identifiable. What this does do though is give collectors an opportunity to expand their personal collections at very reasonable rates for these simply gorgeous lures.

This opens up a whole new realm for collector's. These were typically selling @ $49.95 until they were gone, where you would typically spend anywhere from a couple hundred to a few thousand for those older special colors. Thanks to ebay, these lures have become more widely available and can be picked up sometimes at a much better rate.

Do Not Open Till (Well, Never!)

The big winner of the day had to be this little ol' Heddon Crazy Crawler 9120 GR. Amazingly enough, another one of these sold in a different pattern that same day for only $202 but this baby sold for grand total of $1,195.00. What's the difference you might say, well the color pattern for one and for two, this baby has never, and I mean never been out of the package. Still in the original package with the original seal and seal is not broken. Do not break that seal Mr. Mini-X, yes we have another one here if you read my other post. The Mini-X has been busy for seller midwest-redhead, or should I say the other way around. What are you hiding midwest-redhead? Why do you make all the listings private? What benefit is that? Are you not paying your taxes? I mean I know eBay gets a cut but ol' Uncle Sam wants his fair share as well. Just messing with ya midwest-redhead, you seem to be a great seller with a 100% feedback rating and 1784 auctions held. Not a bad way to be, just don't understand the whole "private" thing, what are you really protecting?

Another beautiful lure passed on via the dream to live another day, the eBay way.

Heddon Crazy Crawler 9120 - Mint In Box

This is one of those "craazy gooood" finds. Oh you mister "User ID kept private", you little lucky dog you. I just love how this one was all secretive and stuff, like that does any good to anything. Shhh, it's a secret that nobody can know that user id "no-name-x-top-secret-agent" but this ultra rare underground lure that has sonar and can search out and attract and attack fish better than any dolphin ever could. eBay "Private" sales just crack me up, especially hobby related. Now I can see if someone was buying a kidney or something that they shouldn't have been like, excuse me here, someones once worn panties, yes, make those private please, better yet, don't even put them on there. Please! Anyways, rant over. Excellent job, and as Dr. Evil would say, "I shall call him, Mini-X".

That being said, great lure, great find, and great buy. This was a Heddon Crazy Crawler 9120, mint in the box, but the box was opened. Color pattern here is exceptional, the rare crawdad pattern. The lure did have a small factory flaw line on the head on the back left side, but I do mean small. Overall great little lure to add to your collection but "Mini-X" beat you to it with a winning bid of $204.18. A little surprising, the lure only had a total of 10 bids on it. This style and class, I would've expected a few more.

Heddon Dowagiac Lure No. 200 Expert, Circa 1912

20070911-heddon1I still get in awe and am simply amazed at the stunning beauty of these lures. The simplicity, the design, nothing fancy, just all the right parts, shape and form. Man what it would have been like to fish these lures back then. What a thrill that must've been to use something nobody had used before. This one, as Steve Irwin would say, is "just gorgeous".

The diagnostics of this plug goes as follows: 4 3/4 inches long, main body color yellow, nose cone is an open water blueish green. The lure is not without flaws though. There were a few paint chips missing in the nose cone and some definite crackling of paint along the body and also some paint chips missing around the eye ring. Lure has 4 treble hooks, a little corrosion (rust spots) but nothing big. The collar is beautiful and attached appropriately.

What a collector's piece! e.b.-auctions did a nice job with the listing and the photo's were excellent. Piece brought in a total of 13 bids and sold for $372.79 to o.reele.rod. Nice going.

Heddon Baby Chugger Spook

20070911-heddonWhat a little beauty this is. This little masterpiece sold on eBay yesterday for $305.70 and gartered 31 bids in the process. Congratulations to p.p.peach as the winning bidder. This is a Heddon Baby Chugger Spook in a very delectable pattern. The body was full black and the pattern was a mixture of shapes all in white all over this little buggers body. This lure was in excellent condition and is an A+ addition to any antique fishing lure collector.

You know though, I do have a little bone to pick about most of these auctions. I'm so tired of seeing "Grandpa's Ol' Lure" or "EX CONDITION, SEE PICS, ANY QUESTIONS EMAIL ME" and that's it. Come on now guys. These lures have a history. They have a story. If you collect them, you know them. Tell them, get others interested in the hobby. Provide a little more information about the piece to the novices out there getting started. Guaranteed, this will not hurt your sales, in fact, it will probably bring more to the table then you'd ever imagine. Wonder why you can pick these up like this, this is why. These are just a complete bore! I know it's not about the story, but I promise you one thing. If it did have one, it probably would've sold for a lot more. Even if it's something as simple as "Hey I picked this up 5 years ago at a antique fishing lures show for around $150 bucks, since then these things have skyrocketed and I've seen them sold upwards of $500 dollars. Gotta get the kids new shoes and new clothes for school so I'm supplementing here." Be original, have a life and a little SOH (sense-of-humor, for those that don't know)!

Antique Fishing Lures: The ebay weekend buzz

Staying on typical form, a lot of antique fishing lure auctions set to end over the weekend, ofcourse this is where the money is at. Here are some of the outstanding finds from this weekends performance.

In the Creek Chub Bait Co. category, a very nice 6807 jointed striper pikie fishing lure sold at auction for $213.50. This lure was in very nice condition with only a few paint line cracks on the belly and very little hook corrosion. Pattern was what I believed to be called mullet. There were many more for the CCBCo that had good numbers and quite a few that sold in the $100 to $150 dollar range, but this is the one that stood out.

For Shakespeare, no real lures stuck out, but there was a very unique find on an antique fishing lure box, box-03fg-1904. Amazingly this box was still in shape, in tact, papers. Just quite a specimen to look at. Brought in an incredible offer and sold for $442.89. I was impressed. Such craftsmanship that you just don't really see much of these days.

In the Heddon category, there were 2 real standouts based on quality and price. The first crab wiggler that had a white body with red blush around the eyes. Sexy, and especially for the going rate of $202.50, very sexy!

The second was a trade minnow 100 that brought in a pretty penny of $179.19. Really clean and very nice sample.

As always, remember guides are great but the market pays!

20070906: Heddon Antique Fishing Lure OTD

Make: Heddon
Model: Giant Joint Vamp
Color: Natural Scale
Eyes: Glass
Condition: Fair-Good
Ebay: $136.50

Overall, nice lure. Glass eyes seem to be in tact well, not discolored. The back body segment has a clear chip in the wood on the top right. Visible aged paint cracks. All hardware looks to be in place but I've seen cleaner. Hooks have that aged look as well. The nose has some very visible wear to it as well. This antique fishing lure seems to have brought a very nice closing price at this auction.

The actual auction description could of used a lot of help:
"from nose to tail it is approx. 6 3/4 inches long if you need more pics or anything else just ask. thanks, happy bidding. p.s. i only ship to u.s. and canada" taken directly from the ebay auction page

The lure could've probably brought a better price if there was a little more meat and description in the sale.

Honorable Mention:
Heddon Punkinseed sold for $63.14. Lure had a chip in one of the eyes.

1928 Heddon Dowagiac Minnow sold for $43.55

Antique Fishing Lures: Pfeiffer's Live Minnow Bait Tube

This was a baitholder lure manufactured by Pfeiffer's Live Bait Holder Co., Detroit Michigan. The box actually had a date marked March 3rd 1914. This is a very interesting antique fishing lure as it wasn't wooden and is not synthetic, it's actual glass. You would load up the glass tube with a natural bait and then fish it like any other plug. This lure was actually bought early on a buy it now option from ebay and went for $1,250.00. Not a bad chunk of change at all. Hope they are careful with the shipping as it is made of glass and being that old has to be very frail and fragile by now. Nice find for me as I'd never seen one of these before.

Welcome to Antique Fishing Lures

Antique fishing lures are quite a passion of mine (as well as others I'm sure). I've always been fascinated by the different makes and models and especially the old wooden lures. I've always wondered just how much the different antique fishing lures would bring at market and I'm always surprised by the disparity in range of values for these lures. Sure there are plenty of guides out there and some very good ones. But that's just what they are, "guides". Sort of like an MSRP, however, it's blatantly obvious that at different times and dependent on the collector and how bad they actually want, what the market rate is for that certain piece of antique fishing lure equipment is worth and will actually sell for, still alot depends on the condition of the lure itself. My main source that I'm going to be pulling from is ebay, what a great place that is indeed. Such the lottery of items being sold in this market daily. The plan is to pick out the "pick of the litter" daily that was sold and make the compilations from there. If you enjoy antique fishing lures the way I do I hope this information will be insightful and as always feel free to drop me a line and leave a comment.
